Panama City Travel Guide: The Panama Canal, Casco Viejo, Rainforest & Private Experiences

Explore Panama City with private Canal tours, Casco Viejo, rainforest wildlife, cultural experiences, island escapes, and luxury stays.

Discover the best things to do in Panama City, from the Panama Canal and historic neighborhoods to rainforest wildlife, Indigenous cultural experiences, private island excursions, and exceptional places to stay.

Panama City is much more than a place to spend the night before heading to the islands or mountains. It is a destination in its own right, where you can explore centuries of history, watch ships cross one of the world’s most important waterways, and discover tropical rainforest without changing hotels.

I lived in Panama for 27 years, and one of the things I love about the capital is how much variety it offers. You might spend the morning at the Panama Canal, the afternoon searching for monkeys on Gatún Lake, and the evening enjoying dinner in historic Casco Viejo.

At JWs Travel, we help guests explore Panama City through private guides, carefully selected accommodations, and experiences shaped around their interests.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Panama City?

For first-time visitors, I generally recommend two or three full days in the Panama City area. That gives you time to experience the Canal, explore Casco Viejo, and enjoy a rainforest or wildlife excursion.

If you are interested in history, food, birdwatching, cultural experiences, or private boating, four or five days can be equally rewarding.

Panama City also makes an excellent base for families who want a variety of experiences without moving between hotels every few nights.

1. Experience the Panama Canal With a Private Guide

Watching an enormous ship move through the Panama Canal’s locks is impressive. Understanding how the Canal works—and the role it has played in Panama’s history and global trade—makes the experience even more memorable.

A private guide can tailor your visit to the subjects that interest you most.

If you love engineering, you might focus on the lock systems, water management, and differences between the original and expanded Canal. History enthusiasts can explore its construction and the people who built it, while travelers interested in international commerce can learn more about its role in global shipping.

Private Observation and Helicopter Experiences

Depending on the facility, operating conditions, permissions, and availability, we can explore arrangements for a quieter or more private observation experience away from the busiest public viewing areas. These arrangements do not provide unrestricted access to Canal infrastructure.

For a different perspective, a private helicopter sightseeing flight may offer aerial views of Panama City, the Canal, Gatún Lake, and the surrounding rainforest. Flight routes depend on weather, aviation permissions, and approved operating arrangements.

Whether you visit from the ground or the air, we can help shape the experience around what fascinates you most.

2. Explore Casco Viejo and Panamá Viejo

Panama City has two historic districts that tell different chapters of its story.

Panamá Viejo: The Original City

Panamá Viejo is the archaeological site of the original Spanish colonial settlement, founded in 1519.

The city became an important colonial trading center before it was attacked by forces led by Henry Morgan in 1671. It was subsequently abandoned, and the surviving ruins offer a glimpse into Panama’s early colonial history.

With a knowledgeable guide, you can explore how the settlement developed, why its location mattered, and how its destruction led to the establishment of a new city.

Casco Viejo: History, Architecture, and Dining

Panama City was reestablished in 1673 at the location now known as Casco Viejo, or Casco Antiguo. Together, Casco Viejo and Panamá Viejo form part of a UNESCO World Heritage designation.

Today, Casco Viejo is a living neighborhood of historic plazas, churches, restored buildings, boutique hotels, cafés, galleries, and restaurants.

You can explore its streets with a private guide, stop for coffee, discover local businesses, and return in the evening for dinner or a rooftop cocktail overlooking the historic district and modern skyline.

Panama’s food scene is another reason to spend time here. Fresh seafood, tropical ingredients, traditional recipes, and contemporary cooking all contribute to the city’s culinary identity.

For travelers particularly interested in colonial history, we can also explore a separate excursion to Portobelo on the Caribbean coast, known for its historic fortifications and role in Spanish colonial trade.

3. Explore Gatún Lake and Monkey Island by Private Boat

One of the most distinctive experiences near Panama City is a private boat excursion on Gatún Lake.

Created as part of the Panama Canal system, the lake is both an essential component of the waterway and an important wildlife habitat. You may see enormous commercial vessels moving through the Canal while exploring smaller waterways bordered by tropical forest.

The Monkey Island area is especially popular with families and wildlife enthusiasts.

Depending on the animals’ natural movements, you may encounter capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, tamarins, tropical birds, and other wildlife. Your guide can adapt the excursion around photography, wildlife observation, or simply enjoying the scenery.

We encourage guests to observe animals without feeding or touching them. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the combination of rainforest wildlife and passing ships makes this a memorable excursion.

4. Discover Gamboa and the Rainforest

The Gamboa area offers opportunities to experience tropical rainforest within reach of Panama City.

A guided nature walk can introduce you to monkeys, sloths, tropical birds, reptiles, amphibians, and smaller forest animals, depending on the habitat and conditions.

A knowledgeable naturalist may identify a bird by its call, spot an animal hidden in the canopy, or explain details of the ecosystem that you might otherwise miss.

Can You See Sloths Near Panama City?

Yes, there are opportunities to look for wild sloths in suitable rainforest habitats. Conservation-focused facilities in the broader Gamboa area may also offer educational experiences, subject to their current operating arrangements.

We prioritize wildlife observation and animal welfare rather than experiences that involve holding or disturbing sloths.

Gamboa has also been known for its rainforest aerial tram and nature attractions. Because individual facilities may change their operating schedules or availability, we confirm what is open when planning your visit.

5. Visit Soberanía National Park With a Specialist Nature Guide

Soberanía National Park is an excellent destination for travelers who want to spend more time exploring Panama’s rainforest.

Its varied habitats support an extraordinary range of birds and other wildlife. The park is particularly well known among birdwatchers, including for the Pipeline Road area.

For a general nature excursion, a private guide can help you discover the forest at a comfortable pace.

For serious birders, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts, we can explore more specialized expeditions with guides who understand local habitats, bird calls, and seasonal activity.

We can also arrange naturalist-led excursions for travelers interested in reptiles and amphibians, including appropriately guided herping experiences. These require suitable conditions and precautions, with observation and habitat protection taking priority.

If wildlife is a major reason for your trip, we can dedicate more time to the environments and species that interest you.

6. Learn From Emberá Hosts on a Community-Led Visit

You do not have to travel to Panama’s most remote regions to learn from its Indigenous communities.

Through local partners, we can arrange community-led experiences with Emberá hosts in the broader Panama City region.

Depending on the community and arrangements, your visit may include a canoe journey, a traditional meal, handicrafts, and opportunities to learn about local history, customs, and the surrounding rainforest. Some visits can also incorporate a guided waterfall or nature excursion when conditions allow.

For families, hands-on activities such as crafts or cooking may be especially engaging.

We coordinate these experiences with attention to community permissions and the preferences of the people welcoming guests. The purpose is to create an opportunity to learn directly from local hosts while supporting the communities sharing their time and knowledge.

7. Escape to the Pearl Islands on a Private Boat

The Pearl Islands offer a Pacific island escape that can fit into a Panama City itinerary.

Depending on your destination and transportation arrangements, you can visit by scheduled ferry or private vessel. A private boat or catamaran charter gives your group more flexibility to enjoy beaches, swimming, snorkeling, and time on the water.

We can also explore private sport-fishing excursions or seasonal marine wildlife outings with experienced local operators.

Routes and activities depend on travel distances, weather, sea conditions, and the captain’s safety decisions. For some travelers, a full-day excursion is ideal; others may prefer an overnight island stay.

The Pearl Islands are worth considering if you want to combine Panama City’s history, dining, and rainforest with a day or two by the Pacific.

8. Discover Taboga Island

Taboga Island offers a different island experience within reach of Panama City.

Known for its village atmosphere, coastal scenery, and history, Taboga can be explored on a day trip without committing to several nights away from the capital.

With a private guide and suitable transportation arrangements, you might learn about the island’s past, walk through the village, enjoy local food, and spend time by the water.

A private boat can provide additional flexibility, subject to operating conditions.

If you are deciding between Taboga and the Pearl Islands, we can help you choose based on whether you prefer a village-focused day or a more extensive boating and beach excursion.

9. Where to Stay in Panama City

Panama City offers accommodations ranging from intimate historic hotels to contemporary high-rise properties and private residences for larger groups.

The right location depends on how you want to spend your time.

Casco Viejo: Historic Luxury and Walkable Dining

Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo and Hotel La Compañía are options for travelers who want to stay in the heart of the historic district.

Their locations make it convenient to explore Casco Viejo’s restaurants, plazas, cafés, and rooftop bars. They can be particularly appealing to couples and guests who enjoy an atmospheric neighborhood setting.

The Santa María: A Resort-Style Setting

The Santa María, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Golf Resort offers a different experience from the historic-district hotels.

It may appeal to travelers who prefer a resort-style atmosphere, golf, and a location away from Casco Viejo’s busier streets.

The choice comes down to whether you value resort amenities or the ability to step outside your hotel and explore the historic district on foot.

Bristol Panama and JW Marriott Panama: Modern City Stays

Bristol Panama and JW Marriott Panama offer alternatives for guests who prefer Panama City’s modern urban setting.

Depending on the property, your priorities might include contemporary accommodations, access to dining and business districts, or skyline and waterfront views.

We choose hotels based on their location, atmosphere, room configurations, and fit with the rest of your itinerary—not simply the name on the building.

Private Villas and Residences for Groups

For larger families, multigenerational vacations, or groups of friends, a private residence may offer more shared space than several separate hotel rooms.

We can explore suitable villas and larger homes in the greater Panama City area, including properties around the former Fort Kobbe area, depending on availability and group requirements.

Bedroom layouts, occupancy limits, amenities, and permitted uses vary by property. Where facilities allow, we can also explore a private chef for a special dinner or meals during your stay.

For some groups, having shared living spaces, private dining, and transportation coordinated around their schedule makes a residence an appealing alternative to a hotel.

10. Build the Right Panama City Itinerary

The amount of time you spend in Panama City should reflect what you want to experience.

Two full days: Explore the Panama Canal and Casco Viejo, then enjoy a private Gatún Lake and Monkey Island excursion.

Three to four days: Add Gamboa, a community-led Emberá visit, Panamá Viejo, or a specialist nature excursion.

Five days or more: Include a Pearl Islands or Taboga excursion, additional rainforest experiences, and time to enjoy the city independently.

For families with younger children, we pay particular attention to excursion lengths, transportation times, and opportunities for downtime. For teenagers or multigenerational groups, a private itinerary allows us to balance shared activities with different interests and energy levels.

You do not need to schedule every day. Panama City is also a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxed morning, a memorable meal, or an afternoon exploring at your own pace.
