Beyond Colorado’s celebrated luxury hotels lies another side of the state: secluded ranches, extraordinary private residences, personalized mountain adventures, and experiences built around the people you are traveling with.
When people think of luxury travel in Colorado, they often picture the beautiful hotels of Aspen, Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Steamboat Springs, and Telluride.
Those destinations offer exceptional vacations, but they represent only part of what Colorado has to offer.
Some of the most memorable places to stay are tucked into mountain valleys, surrounded by thousands of acres of wilderness, or set high above a town with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. They are places where you can spend a morning horseback riding, enjoy a chef-prepared dinner with your family, and end the evening beside a fire without ever feeling the need to leave the property.
My husband, Tyler, has lived in Colorado for 35 years. We have both lived and worked in its mountain communities, visited extraordinary private homes, and developed relationships with local partners throughout the state.
At JWs Travel, we use that firsthand knowledge and those connections to create private Colorado vacations that go beyond the familiar resort experience.
Colorado’s Luxury Ranches: An Entire Vacation in One Remarkable Setting
One of the most overlooked ways to experience Colorado is through a luxury ranch stay.
Rather than treating your accommodations as somewhere to return after a day of sightseeing, a ranch can become the centerpiece of your vacation. Many offer beautiful lodging, memorable dining, and a range of guided outdoor activities within the property or surrounding landscape.
The experience varies considerably from one ranch to another. Some are designed around privacy and exclusive group stays, while others offer a lively resort atmosphere or a traditional family ranch vacation with elevated accommodations and service.
These are four properties we would consider, depending on your interests and travel style.
C Lazy U Ranch: A Classic Colorado Ranch Experience for Families
Located near Granby, C Lazy U Ranch spans approximately 8,500 acres of mountain landscape.
The property offers luxury rustic cabins and private multi-bedroom accommodations, making it particularly appealing for families and multigenerational groups.
Horseback riding is central to the ranch experience, but guests can also enjoy a broader range of seasonal outdoor activities, dining, and time together in the mountains.
The ranch is known for its gourmet dining and wine program, while the Lazy You Spa offers an opportunity to relax between adventures.
For families who want their children to experience Colorado’s ranching traditions while enjoying comfortable accommodations and attentive service, C Lazy U is a property we would explore.
We would review the available activities, children’s programming, accommodation options, and current stay requirements to determine how well it fits your family.
Smith Fork Ranch: A Private Buyout for One Group at a Time
Smith Fork Ranch, near Crawford, offers a very different kind of experience.
The historic guest ranch is designed around exclusive use, hosting one group at a time in a secluded setting surrounded by national forest.
That privacy makes it especially interesting for family gatherings, intimate weddings, corporate retreats, and groups who want an entire property to themselves.
A stay can include customized activities such as horseback riding and fly fishing on the Smith Fork River, along with farm-to-table dining.
For a group celebrating a milestone occasion, the ability to gather in one setting without sharing the property with unrelated guests can be a major part of its appeal.
A private buyout is also a substantial investment. We would confirm current rates, guest capacity, minimum stays, and inclusions before preparing a proposal.
Vista Verde Ranch: An Intimate Mountain Retreat Near Steamboat Springs
Located near Steamboat Springs, Vista Verde Ranch offers an intimate luxury ranch experience with private cabins and lodge accommodations.
It combines the character of a Colorado guest ranch with upscale lodging, guided outdoor activities, and chef-crafted dining.
Depending on the season, guests can explore experiences such as horseback riding and fly fishing before returning to the ranch for a relaxed evening.
For couples or families who want an immersive ranch vacation without reserving an entire property, Vista Verde is an option we would discuss.
We would compare its seasonal programming, accommodations, and dining arrangements with your group’s interests before recommending a stay.
Devil’s Thumb Ranch: Mountain Luxury and Outdoor Adventure
Devil’s Thumb Ranch, near Tabernash and Winter Park, offers a larger resort-style experience across approximately 6,500 acres of mountain landscape.
Its rustic-luxury design creates a distinctly Colorado atmosphere, while its accommodations, dining, spa, and outdoor activities give guests plenty to enjoy without traveling far from the property.
Depending on the season and current offerings, activities may include horseback riding, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and other guided adventures.
The ranch is particularly appealing for travelers who want a beautiful mountain retreat with a broad range of amenities and activities available in one location.
It can also work well for families whose members have different interests: some may want an active day outdoors while others prefer the spa, dining, or simply enjoying the setting.
Choosing the Right Ranch
These four ranches offer distinctly different vacations.
Experience we would exploreEach of these ranches offers a distinctly different way to experience Colorado. C Lazy U Ranch is an excellent choice for families and multigenerational groups looking for a classic luxury ranch vacation with a wide variety of activities. Smith Fork Ranch offers something considerably more private, with the opportunity for an exclusive property buyout that can be particularly appealing for family gatherings, weddings, or corporate retreats.
Vista Verde Ranch provides a more intimate ranch experience, combining upscale accommodations with guided activities and dining in a beautiful mountain setting. Devil’s Thumb Ranch, meanwhile, offers a larger resort-style experience with extensive amenities and seasonal adventures, making it particularly appealing for groups whose members may want different activities during their stay.
The right choice depends less on which ranch is the most luxurious and more on the atmosphere, level of privacy, accommodations, and experiences that best fit your group.
We would also examine what is included in each stay. Some ranches offer packages that combine accommodations, meals, and activities, while certain experiences, services, or seasonal offerings may carry additional charges.
The right ranch is not necessarily the largest or most expensive. It is the one that provides the atmosphere, privacy, and activities your group will enjoy most.
Private Mountain Estates: Your Own Colorado Retreat
For families and groups who want greater privacy, a private mountain estate can offer an entirely different experience from a hotel.
Instead of booking several separate rooms, you can gather in one extraordinary home, enjoy spacious living areas, and spend time together without sharing common spaces with other guests.
We have access to remarkable private residences throughout Colorado, including properties in Steamboat Springs, Beaver Creek, and Aspen.
Steamboat Springs: A Private Estate for Large Gatherings
One of the properties we often consider in Steamboat Springs can accommodate up to approximately 28 guests, although around 20 may be a more comfortable number depending on the group’s sleeping arrangements.
It is the kind of residence we would explore for a wedding gathering, bachelor or bachelorette celebration, corporate retreat, or a large family vacation.
For groups of this size, having everyone under one roof can transform the experience. You can gather for meals, spend evenings together, and enjoy shared spaces without coordinating multiple hotel rooms.
We would carefully review the property’s actual sleeping configuration, event permissions, occupancy rules, and available services before recommending it for a particular gathering.
Beaver Creek: Golf-Course Views and Exceptional Family Homes
Some of the private estates we love in the Beaver Creek area sit on or overlook the golf course, with beautiful mountain views and generous indoor and outdoor living spaces.
Many accommodate approximately ten guests, making them appealing for extended families or groups of couples traveling together.
Depending on the residence, features may include hot tubs, wine cellars, expansive balconies, courtyards, and impressive primary suites with luxurious ensuite bathrooms.
For a multigenerational family, this style of accommodation can provide the space to gather for dinner while allowing grandparents, parents, and children to enjoy their own rooms and routines.
We would select a property based on its specific features rather than assume every estate offers the same amenities.
Aspen: Extraordinary Homes Above the Valley
Tyler and I have both spent time inside Aspen residences valued at approximately $30 million, and the scale and design of some of these homes are remarkable.
Expansive fireplaces, walls of glass overlooking the mountains, beautiful outdoor living areas, and amenities such as pools, hot tubs, and saunas can make the residence itself a major part of the vacation.
Some of Aspen’s most striking estates are located outside the downtown core, including properties on Red Mountain and in the McLain Flats area.
McLain Flats has a particularly beautiful setting, with open meadows, mountain views, and perspectives across the valley below. Elk also frequent the broader area, although sightings are never guaranteed.
For guests seeking privacy, space, and a quieter setting, an estate outside downtown Aspen may be preferable to staying in the center of town.
We would discuss the trade-offs, including driving times, winter access, proximity to restaurants and ski areas, and whether your family prefers a secluded residence or the convenience of walking through Aspen.
Private Colorado Guides: Experiences Built Around Your Interests
An exceptional property is only one part of a Colorado vacation.
For guests who want to explore beyond their accommodations, our local guiding partners allow us to arrange private experiences suited to their interests, abilities, and preferred pace.
We work with operators who can provide guiding and transportation across Colorado, including higher-end experiences for small groups.
As an illustration, some of our ultra-luxury mountain guiding options are priced around $2,500 per day, while certain private Denver experiences are approximately $1,000 per day. Other operators price their services according to group size, route, and activities.
These are planning examples rather than fixed quotes; the final price depends on the experience, date, inclusions, and operator.
Private Hiking and Mountain Exploration
For a family, we might arrange a scenic hike with a knowledgeable guide who can explain the landscape and adjust the pace for younger children.
For active adults, we could explore a more demanding mountain route or a full day of guided adventure.
We can also consider lesser-known areas throughout Colorado rather than limit every itinerary to the most familiar viewpoints.
Where activities take place in a national park or another protected area, we work within applicable authorization, entry, and access requirements. Private guiding does not provide unrestricted access to closed or protected locations.
Fly Fishing, Float Trips, and Horseback Riding
Colorado offers extraordinary opportunities for travelers who enjoy spending time outdoors.
We can explore privately guided fly fishing, float trips, and horseback riding, selecting experiences appropriate to your group’s interests and level of experience.
A first-time angler may enjoy a relaxed introduction to fly fishing, while an experienced guest may prefer a more specialized outing with a knowledgeable local guide.
For families, a horseback ride through mountain meadows can become one of the most memorable parts of the vacation.
We would choose the location, operator, and duration based on seasonal conditions, availability, and the abilities of everyone participating.
Wildlife and Eagle-Watching Experiences
For guests especially interested in wildlife, we can work with our Colorado guides to explore responsible observation opportunities.
Depending on the location and season, that may include looking for elk, deer, moose, birds of prey, and other animals in their natural habitats.
Our guiding connections also have knowledge of areas where bald eagles may be observed. When appropriate, we can explore responsible viewing opportunities that respect nesting protections, seasonal closures, and safe distances.
We do not approach active nests, disclose sensitive nesting locations, or guarantee wildlife sightings.
The value of a knowledgeable guide is not a promise that an animal will appear. It is the opportunity to understand the landscape, observe responsibly, and spend time in places suited to your interests.
Private Aviation, Helicopters, and Personalized Services
For travelers seeking a higher level of privacy and convenience, we can also explore private aviation, helicopter experiences, and additional personalized services through our partners.
Depending on the itinerary, those arrangements may help connect destinations, provide a different perspective on Colorado’s landscapes, or simplify travel for a group with specific needs.
We can also explore private-chef arrangements and other services for suitable residences, subject to the property’s rules and local availability.
Every experience is planned around what is feasible and appropriate for the destination. Weather, operating permissions, seasonal conditions, and availability all play a role, particularly for aviation and specialized mountain activities.
The objective is not to add expensive services simply because they are available. It is to create a vacation where each arrangement contributes to the experience you want.
Discover a Different Side of Colorado With JWs Travel
Colorado’s celebrated luxury hotels deserve their reputation, but they are only one way to experience the state.
You might prefer a private ranch reserved entirely for your family, an Aspen estate overlooking the valley, a Beaver Creek residence where three generations can gather, or a secluded mountain retreat with outdoor adventures just beyond your door.
You might want to spend every day exploring with a private guide—or choose a few exceptional experiences and leave the rest of your vacation open.
Colorado is our home. We have lived in its mountain communities, explored its destinations firsthand, and built relationships with people who know the landscapes and experiences that make this state distinctive.
At JWs Travel, we bring that local knowledge and those connections together to create a private Colorado vacation built around you—not a standard itinerary that could belong to anyone.
