Panama is a relatively small country, but experiencing it well requires more than choosing a few destinations from a map. Panama City, the Caribbean islands, Guna Yala, the Pacific coast, the highlands, indigenous communities, rainforests and small mountain towns can feel like entirely different worlds.
At Wofford Travel, our approach to custom Panama travel starts with something simple: we know Panama personally.
Wofford Travel owner Jaury Wofford lived in Panama for 27 years. Her family remains there, and her connection to the country goes far beyond knowing its hotels, attractions and most popular destinations. Panama is home.
That local connection has shaped the way we design travel throughout the country. Rather than offering a collection of predetermined tours, we create highly personalized Panama vacations around the individual traveler — their interests, their pace and, most importantly, the kind of experience they want to have.
Personalization Comes Before Price
There will almost always be a cheaper way to travel.
Our goal isn't to create the cheapest Panama vacation. It's to create the best experience for the individual traveler.
Sometimes that means arranging private transportation instead of a shared transfer. Sometimes it means experiencing the Panama Canal from a private observation deck rather than simply purchasing admission to a crowded visitor center. In Guna Yala, it might mean arranging a private mola workshop and spending time learning directly about Guna culture rather than visiting the islands solely for their beaches.
The difference can be found in dozens of small decisions throughout a trip.
We want to know why you're coming to Panama. Are you fascinated by wildlife? Do you want to understand Panama's history? Is your family interested in indigenous culture? Are you looking for adventure? Incredible food? Coffee? Beaches? Fishing? Nightlife?
Maybe the answer is all of the above.
That's where the planning begins.
Local Guides — and Continuity Throughout Your Trip
One of the things we value most is connecting travelers with people who genuinely know the places they're experiencing.
Whenever possible, we don't simply arrange a different guide for every activity. We try to provide continuity throughout the journey, pairing a traveler or group with a local guide who gets to know them and remains with them throughout much of their time in Panama.
For many of our itineraries, that person is Joshua of Go Highlands Tours.
Joshua is a Boquete native with extensive experience throughout Panama, including Panama City and the surrounding rainforest. Rather than meeting a stranger every morning, our goal is for travelers to develop a relationship with someone who understands their personalities, interests and travel style as the trip progresses.
There is one important exception: Guna Yala.
When travelers enter Guna Yala, we believe the experience should be led by someone whose expertise comes from within the culture itself.
That's where Victor Peretz comes in.
Victor is Guna, born and raised in Panama, and has spent years introducing travelers to Panama through LOCALINPTY and, more recently, sharing his own culture and homeland through ANMARDULE.
That opens the door to experiences that go far beyond simply visiting a beautiful Caribbean island.
Depending on the traveler, that could include private cultural experiences, mola workshops, traditional fishing, cooking, village visits, snorkeling, exploring remote islands or simply spending time understanding a way of life that most visitors to Panama know very little about.
Access Changes What Is Possible
Some experiences can't simply be found by searching online.
One of Wofford Travel's greatest advantages in Panama is our network of relationships and local connections.
Those relationships give us the ability to ask a different question.
Instead of asking, "Which tour can we book?"
We can ask, "Can we make this happen?"
For travelers who want an elevated level of privacy, we can tap into connections for private aviation, private ground transportation, private boat transfers, villas, yachts, catamarans and even private island experiences.
Not every traveler needs that level of exclusivity, and we don't believe luxury means adding expensive elements simply because they're available.
The value is in having the access when it makes sense.
A family might value having a private vehicle and guide so the day can move at the children's pace. A couple may want a private boat rather than joining a group excursion. A multigenerational family may need transportation and activities designed around very different mobility levels and interests.
Another traveler may want to take privacy considerably further — traveling by private aircraft, chartering a yacht or catamaran, staying in a private villa or spending several days on an island away from traditional tourism.
The experience should fit the traveler, not the other way around.
There Isn't One "Right" Way to Experience Panama
One of our favorite things about Panama is how much variety exists within such a small country.
For someone fascinated by wildlife, we can build a journey around rainforest, monkeys, sloths, marine life, birding and some of Panama's extraordinary national parks and protected waters.
For someone interested in history, Panama can become a story stretching from indigenous cultures and Spanish colonialism to the construction of the Panama Canal and the country's modern identity.
For travelers drawn to culture, the experience might include Guna Yala, local neighborhoods, markets, food, artisans and communities rarely included in conventional itineraries.
Adventure travelers can explore volcanoes, cloud forests, rivers, reefs and Pacific islands through hiking, rafting, snorkeling, diving, fishing, ziplining and other experiences.
Food and coffee can become the centerpiece of an entirely different journey through Panama City's culinary scene and the coffee-growing highlands surrounding Boquete.
And sometimes people simply want to have fun.
Panama City has a completely different personality after dark. We can incorporate restaurants, rooftop bars, cocktails, Casco Viejo and nightlife — including private bar-hopping experiences — into a trip that might have begun that same morning surrounded by rainforest.
Those aren't separate versions of Panama.
They're all Panama.
Your Panama, Not Someone Else's
We don't believe the best Panama itinerary is one that can be copied and handed to the next traveler.
Two families traveling for the same number of days may receive completely different recommendations from us because they have different interests, priorities, budgets and definitions of a great vacation.
Our job is to listen first.
Then we use Jaury's 27 years in Panama, her family and personal connections throughout the country, and the expertise of trusted local partners like Joshua and Victor to turn those conversations into something that would be difficult to recreate from a standard tour catalog.
Sometimes that means adding privacy. Sometimes it means gaining access to something unusual. Sometimes it simply means knowing the right person to put beside you when you arrive.
We aren't trying to show travelers the most Panama possible.
We're trying to show them the Panama they'll remember.
